What Performance Evaluation/Appraisal Training is Available on Your Campus?

Message sent to campus training advocates, January 27, 2003

Dear Campus Training Advocates:

I have had an inquiry from a manager at one of our campuses as to whether anyone is conducting training for their managers on conducting a performance evaluation. I do not have any systemwide training scheduled on that subject for this year.

I promised to get back to the manager regarding other training that might be available on one of your campuses.

Please advise as to what you have scheduled between now and the end of June 2003.

Thank you.

Lynne Hellmer

CHANCELLOR'S OFFICE:

We have provided this training for the past two years at the C.O. and intend to offer it again this year, probably sometime in May. I consider it a critical area which needs to be addressed each year, for both new and seasoned managers, especially with the CSEA contract changes which have occurred this past July. With our budget cuts I'm not sure I can afford the excellent trainer we had last year, so perhaps you could help us work something out, Lynne. Look forward to hearing from any or all of you!

Thanks.

HR Services, Chancellor's Office

FRESNO:

Our campus conducts performance evaluations for all staff units (non-MPP) in the month of October. We therefore offer to the campus community, several two-hour workshops on performance evaluations for managers/evaluators in the month of September. One is for those new to the evaluation process, and other sessions are refresher courses highlighting best practices, Do's and Don'ts, updating any changes, etc. Managers and supervisors from a specific unit may also request a special performance evaluation review or briefing as a part of our "Just-in-Time" training series available to our managers on the Employee Assistance & Development Website.

We have SPECIFIC training, meaning on forms, pre-performance evaluations, etc. that work here at Fullerton. Dunno if everyone's using the same forms...you're welcome to attend when we do this cycle's which will be mid-March to mid-April.

SAN DIEGO:

We do not have anything scheduled between now and the end of June. However, I would be interested in seeing how others are conducting their performance evaluation training as it is a fundamental process in our CSU system.

SAN JOSE:

We have several workshops scheduled this Spring which address Performance Management. Our target audiences are Managers, Department Chairs, and Work Leads. We have one session that addresses the SJSU Annual Review Process and forms, another session that addresses Setting Goals and Expectations, another session that addresses Giving Performance Feedback, and another session on Dealing with Marginal Performers. Since our annual process begins in May, most of these are scheduled in May and June.

SONOMA:

We usually do a couple of Performance Evaluation trainings around June/July. We do separate trainings for Appropriate Administrators who have CSEA and APC employees, as these contract have specific requirements. We would welcome guests from other campuses.

STANISLAUS:

I did want to respond that CSU Stanislaus does provide Performance Evaluation training on a quarterly basis to supervisors and managers. It is a one day workshop that reviews the process (forms, CBA requirements) and includes how to set the stage for an effective performance review, exercises in writing performance statements and setting/writing performance expectations for the next evaluation. We also review a performance evaluation tool to help managers assess the level of performance. The tool was developed to provide a greater level of consistency in how we rate our employees across the campus. So far our managers have found the process to be very helpful in writing performance evaluations.
