Workshops

I. Improving Communication By Understanding Your Style

(aka, The Synergy of Mental Diversity)

Are you red, blue, or green?
What does it mean? And what difference does it make?!

The Strength Deployment Inventoryâ is an assessment tool that identifies one's motivation and behavior in interacting with others on a routine basis and during conflict. Workshop emphasis is on each individual's strengths in relating to others and how those strengths may be used to improve relationships. The possible consequences of overdone or misunderstood strengths are also examined.

Most importantly, participants learn how to more effectively interact with people with different styles than their own -- especially valuable when communication is needed to persuade or motivate, to problem-solve, or build consensus.

This is self-discovery that fosters more rewarding relationships in organizations, at home, and in society. The interactive workshop is popular because it's fun, practical, and the lessons learned stay with participants for years to come.

II. Handling Hostile People
Do you have interactions with students or co-workers who become angry? Do you know how to maintain control of the situation even when the other person is "losing it"? Nonviolent Crisis Interventionä is a safe, non-harmful behavior management system designed to aid in the management of disruptive and assaultive individuals.

You'll be trained in techniques for approaching and reducing tension of a person who is acting out, as well as alternatives if that person loses control. Skills in nonverbal, paraverbal, verbal, and physical intervention are taught and practiced. You'll also learn techniques to control your own anxieties and maintain a professional attitude. Be sure to wear comfy clothes and shoes (no mini-skirts, sandals or high heels).

Passing the post-test at the end of the course certifies participants in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention for one year.

Here's what some participants at CSUSB have said about NVCI:

  • "The course was very beneficial. I would highly recommend it to staff who have dealings with the public."
  • "Entire campus should attend! Useful tools for anyone."
  • "Anyone who deals with students and faculty will benefit from this."
  • "I learned useful techniques that are easy to incorporate."
  • "The class provided understanding as well as skills to be used in various situations."
  • "I found the crisis development model and the nonverbal behavior sections very helpful."
  • "Very, very useful!"
  • "It will help me deal with irritated students better as well as be more supportive to the staff who are dealing with those students."
  • "This workshop is particularly helpful to my job as the chair of an academic department."
  • "I learned new techniques to deal with difficult people and even some life saving tips."
